Project Overview

A new perspective on pet safety and transport. People spend millions of dollars on pet accessories annually, but give minimal thought to how they transport their pets in the car. In the event of an accident, an unrestrained pet can become a projectile, placing it and the humans in the car at risk of serious injury. Most options on the market focus on restraining the dog, which protects humans in the event of a crash, but neglects the need for most pets to be able to move around, and have been proven unsafe for the dog in crash testing. Through user interviews and market research, the need for a secure pet enclosure capable of protecting both animal and humans in the event of a crash was identified. This project spanned two semesters and two classes covering needs-finding based product design and design for manufacturability. The end result is a manufacturable and structurally sound skeleton over which upholstery can be laid. More details of this project will be disclosed upon completion of a provisional patent.
